More is a character that stays very true to himself and his beliefs. He stands by his morals and never strays from his ideas of right and wrong. He holds very strong beliefs and will not let other people convince him of any other ideas. More stands behind his moral beliefs so much that not even a man as powerful as the king is able to change his mind. The king needs More's consent for his divorce and new marriage to Anne (so a son could be born to take the throne.) The king wants More's approval to make him feel like he had a clean conscience.
             I think that through More, Robert Bolt carries out his own personal opinions. He believes in the idea of following the dictate's of one's own conscience instead of human's law. For example, he shows that man must follow his beliefs strictly and not give into outside pressures (represented through More.) He shows how outside pressure interfere with following g-ds law and man's own law by showing how the King pressure More to change his opinion. The king is a powerful, wealthy and very influential figure yet More still does not break down. More does not have to think about his morals before taking action. He is such an honest man indeed that he acts based on instinct and morality without harming his conscience.
             Robert Bolt contrasts More's personality to other characters in the play such as Cromwell. Cronmwell is the opposite of More because he has anything but a clean conscience. He is a man who will do anything to achieve what he wants. He does not care about who he hurts or what he ruins on the way to getting what he wants. Cromwell is one of the man people that contributed to More's death. Cromwell enjoys having power and flaunts it to further make himself look important. An example of this is when he holds Rich's (who is very impressionable) in the flame (represent flames of hell, evil, devil).
