             One of the ways that the unimportance of marriage is shown in 10 Things I Hate About You is through the lack of married couples in the film. Bianca believes boyfriend-girlfriend relationships are important but she is not exposed to them as a result of her over-protective father. Due to an unpleasant experience in her past, Kat hates the boys or "...unwashed miscreants..." that go to her school and she does not believe relationships to be important. She is completely uninterested in dating. Sex plays a major role in relationships in 10 Things I Hate About You. The reason Kat hates Joey is because she had sex with him when everyone else was doing it. This affected the person she is today and she swore never to do anything because everyone else is doing it. This is the reason she cares so little about what people think of her and why she is protective of Bianca when it comes to a relationship with Joey. Walter Stratford believes that teenage relationships always lead to sex and the ramifications of sex are something he deals with daily. "Kissing? Is that what you think happens? Kissing isn't what keeps me up to my elbows in placenta all day long." This has a significant impact on Bianca because Walter's rule is that she is not allowed to date until she graduates.
