Elder Abuse

             Imagine yourself unable to make your own decisions, who would make these decisions for you? Would you trust this person to take care of you and act in your best interest? If your guardian did not act in your best interest, would you have any defense or protection against them? While the majority of guardians fulfill their duties and provide proper care to those in their charge, there are some guardians that abuse their power. Those who are incapacitated need to be guaranteed the proper care and medical attention they need. There is a great need for a system to protect those under the care of a guardian, when someone realizes that a guardian is abusing their authority, they should be able to do something about it. There also needs to be some form of checkup system to insure that those under the care of a guardian are being cared for. While there are federal laws concerning sexual abuse, child abuse, and domestic violence, there are none concerning elder abuse. With an ever increasing population of elderly people, who are steadily increasing in age, there are also more elderly and disabled people living in their own homes relying on outside care sources, making them more susceptible to abuse. While elder abuse is a major thing to be concerned with, the elderly are not the only ones subject to abuse by their guardians, those who are disabled mentally and/or physically to the extent often have no more, and possible less, control over their situations than do the elderly. Because guardians have so much control over another person's life, there are many ways in which they can abuse their power and thus those in their care. According to the US Senate Special Committee on Aging approximately 5 million older adults are being affected by abuse of some type.
