The theme of Kate Chopin's short story "The Storm" can speak for itself. The theme, central idea of a story, is about the storm that built in the air and within two people passed through. Calixta was clueless as to what was about to happen. When she finally realized the approaching wild storm she went outside to gather the clothing that was hanging out to dry. Without her knowing, who was around when the storm broke out, and apparently broke out in her as well. The last love in her life before marriage came riding up in her yard. The storm that broke out in her was the feelings that were quietly stored in her heart. With Alcee and Calixta to themselves the righteous storm broke out inside as well as outside.
             The storm set the mood for Calixta and Alcee to share the feelings that had been hiding for so long, "They did not heed the crashing torrents, and the roar of the elements made her laugh as she lay in his arms". When a bolt of lighting struck a chinaberry tree in the yard Calixta fell back into Alcee's big muscular arms. She felt a sigh of relief in his arms. Calixta and Alcee were able to quench the passion they had once before while the storm raged. They passionately relived the past while clinging to each other for support. They reminded each other of the great times they spent together in Assumption. Calixta was very excited that he remembered the great times they had there. She answered with great joy when he asks if she remembered. While they were making out Alcee's nerves seemed to calm. The calm after the storm they were able to part with a sly smile to each other while Alcee rode off into the sun.
             Calixta, the main well rounded character, is torn between two loves. She is married with a child, but she experiences the feelings she had of her first love a second time. Calixta is a very caring passionate person. She always seems to care about everyone that she is connected...
