The use of Narrators

The way a narrator is used is a very important part of any story. In the three stories I read the authors uses three different types of narrators. A narrator is the person that tells the story. The narrator that the author uses determines the point of view that we will read the story from. This is why authors use different narrators for different stories. For example in The Blair Handbook it says that by using first person point of view it puts the narrator right in the action. In the short stories "Everyday use" and "The Family of Little Feet" authors Alice Walker and Sandra Cisneros use participant narrators. As you read the rest of this essay you will find that all participant narrators are not the same. In the short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" Ambrose Bierce uses an objective and a limited omniscient narrator.
In "Everyday Use" Walker uses a participant narrator. A participant narrator tells the story in first person. Walker uses a participant narrator because it puts the mother in the middle of the action, also allowing others to speak for themselves, making the dialogue reliable. In the story Dee says she will hang the quilts on the wall. With this type of narrator we are best informed on how Dee feels about everything, and what she wants to do with the heirlooms. We also know how Maggie feels about her sister and the situation with the quilt.
The narrator in the story is the mother; she sets the scene by telling the history between her daughters Dee and Maggie and how different they are. From her point of view what Dee wanted to do with the heirlooms was wrong. You know this because when Dee says "she'd probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use". The mother says, "She probably would". If the mother were not a participant narrator we would have never heard that conversation as accurately as we did.
