Urbanization

             Why do urban and rural populations tend to differ so dramatically in population characteristics? Are these differences diminishing or increasing over time? Why?
             Urbanization is a process in which an increasing proportion of an entire population lives in cities and the suburbs of cities. It has always been connected with the process of industrialization. Driven by lack of economic opportunity in rural areas, political unrest, and other factors, many millions of people flock to big cities every year. Urbanization results from industrialization, this is due to the rise of the modern factory; which drew millions of people out of rural areas and transformed them into urban, industrial workers. Recently there has been an increase in the population of the urban cities due to the rise of industrialization and technological advancement.
             Urban cities are relatively large and densely populated and settlers usually don¡t produce their own food, which of course is the opposite case in the rural cities. During the pre-industrial revolution time period food surplus was one of the reasons that allowed workers to seek non-agricultural jobs. With the various equality movements and the rise of democracy came the rise of literacy among the working class and allowing them to attain more technology based jobs. Another reason that caused the population in the rural cities to decline was due to the technological innovations such as metallurgy and the harnessing of wind and water power allowed agricultural irrigation and grain milling.; therefore cutting drastically the need for man power in the agricultural industry.
             This technological advancement resulted in the rise of the standard of living, therefore increasing the population.
