Between1645 and 1950 the wartime alliance that existed during World War II, between the United States and the Soviet Union broke down and the Cold War began. Both Countries tried to increase its worldwide influence and spread it's competing economic and political systems.
In document 1, Winston Churchill describes "the iron curtain" as a dividing line because the soviets had taken over the Capitals of Central and Eastern Europe. In document 2, President Truman presented a new policy. He believed that the United States should help other countries that are being taken over. In documents 3, Secretary of State Marshall suggested that the United States should do whatever it can do to help the world economically, especially to help Europe after the War. Document 4 explains the formation of NATO. If there is an attack on one, there is an attack on all NATO members.
Document 7 explains the importance of the Arms Race in the Cold War. Both superpowers helped develop technology and used their nuclear power to build as many weapons possible. The U.S.S.R was always competing with the United States to see who had the most ICBM's (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles). Documents 9 explains that after President Kennedy ordered a quarantine of all military equipment being sent to Cuba, Premier Khrushchev of the U.S.S.R said that they were placed for defensive purposes. They were going to be removed because the US agreed that Cuba would not be attacked or invaded by any country in the Western Hemisphere.
These documents help explain how the Cold War began, and the weapons that were used to fight in the war.
