In almost every aspect of life there are what we call "heroes." Sometimes these figures can be imaginary or larger than life like superman, or they can be real people like Ghandi or Martin Luther King Jr. Now what makes them heroes is that they either did something extraordinary, they took a stand for something when everyone else was afraid to, or they say what they think when others lack the courage to do so. Anyone who possesses any of the previous qualities to me is a hero in my mind because they tend to look past the consequences and ridicule to fulfill what they think is their job to do. When people speak up to say what is on their mind I especially admire that because the majority of the time nobody wants to hear what they have to say because most of the time what they are saying is true. When people protested the Vietnam War they were either arrested or detained because the government did not want them to voice their opinion (i.e. the brother and sister who wore the bands to school in protest of the war). Sometimes it may take someone's courageous statements to start a movement. Patrick Henry' s famous line, "Give me liberty or give me death" inspired many colonists to stand up and fight for their independence from Britain. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech motivated many African Americans to peacefully protest to get their civil rights that many White Americans denied them of. All it takes is for someone to stand up and speak their mind and voice their opinion. At first their comments might seem to be minute, but in time they might have made an impact on many. Former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt' s response, "A date which will live in infamy" to the attacks on Pearl Harbor had encouraged Americans to want to go to and enter the war.
