The importance of being ernest

             The important of being earnest was written by Oscar Wilde during the late period of the Victorian era. The play is set in two different settings which is the city of London and the country in England. In the first act of the play, Wilde introduces the London setting which took place at the flat of young wealthy man named Algernon.
             The play starts with Algernon playing the piano in his room. From the description of the play, the house is fully furnished with artistically decoration and looks very luxurious. Wilde tries to depict the luxurious lifestyle of an aristocrat in the upper class of the society. Then, Mr. Jack Worthing comes to his house during his visit to London. At the same time, Algernon is expecting his aunt, lady Bracknell to drop by at his house with her daughter, Gwendolen. In the house, both Algernon and Jack Worthing are having tea and bread and butter as well as the sandwiches. This sort of refreshment is one example of the rich lifestyle for aristocrat people in London. Later in this act, Algernon found out that Mr. Jack Worthing are coming to the city not for a business purpose but only for seeking pleasure by proposing a marriage to Gwendolen. Here, Wilde tries to reveal the reality which is what was happening in the Victorian society. Most people from upper class society tend to seek for pleasure in London. Those who are settling down in the country areas, for example, Mr. Worthing, will most probably come to the city for getting pleasure by flirting or in extreme way one might even having homosexual relationships. Hence, the city of London which is well developed and equipped with casinos, restaurants, theatres as well as clubs are seen as the perfect place for this people to excuse themselves from duty and responsibility in the country.
             Mr Jack Worthing is ideally having a double life in London whereby he uses other name which is Ernest. He leads a life of respectability in the country
