In the book, Nine Stories, by J.D. Salinger, there are connections within each of the stories. The three stories I choose to link were "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," "Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut," and "The Laughing Man". For each of these stories Salinger used specific themes. The three themes were childhood innocence and lack of it, war is destructive and ruins peoples' lives and the sensitive being or artist has a hard time existing in a cold world. The three ideas I am mainly going to explore are childhood innocence, superficial characters, and sensitive men as casualties in the world.
             First, in the story "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," the names of the characters in the story are Muriel, Sybil, and Seymour. Muriel is the first character you meet who is very materialistic and does not care about her husband, and people's feelings. Muriel is one of those superficial characters. Muriel is too concerned with the way she looks rather then how her life is and achievements she has made. Her husband Seymour recently came home from World War II and has gone through a lot of life altering war experiences. Seymour s one of those characters who suffers from lack of childhood innocence. Seymour had gone to war at a young age and didn't have a chance to mature into adulthood at a normal pace. Since he is back from war he is looking for innocence because he lacks it. That quote shows his interest in Sybil. Once they start hanging out Sybil proves to be a bratty girl who should be innocent but isn't. That quote was Sybil making fun of Seymour's name. When Sybil and Seymour are hanging out Seymour is trying to dig into her mentally and grasp some of her innocence but it doesn't really work. At the end Seymour Glass cannot live his life anymore because he has not found the innocence he was searching for therefore, he has no apparent reason to live. That quote shows t...
