Rose for emily and everyday use

             In short stories, the setting allows the reader to visualize the character's behavior by knowing the environment that the characters are surrounded by. The setting cannot only be a backdrop for the plot, but it can also serve as a frightening or romantic visual. In the short stories, "Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner and "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, the settings were both taken place in the south around the 20th century.
             However, the "Rose for Emily' was taken place in a small town called Jefferson in the early 20th century, where as "Everyday Use" was taken place on a pasture during the mid 20th century. The "Rose for Emily" mainly took place on the same site, but however throughout the story the site would change as time passed. The clues that were given to allow the reader to know what time period the story "A Rose for Emily" took place was by the language that was used, such as referring to an African American as a "Negro" and by having the maids being only African American.
             The "Rose for Emily" was about a woman who mainly lived alone by herself, except for the maids who worked in the house. Throughout the story the town was trying to get her tax money that she owed, but however she refused to pay it because she claimed that it had already been paid. Also during the short story her father dies, which after that she never left her house. She did however start to go out when she met a man, which later she married. After the wedding, people rarely ever saw the two. Well, at the end she died, which then the town allowed the people to tour the house. When touring the house the people of the town found the decomposed body of the husband.
             The "Everyday Use" story is about an African American woman who explains her southern heritage through the use of a quilt. The quilt was an ancestral quilt that was intended for her daughter, but a woman named Mrs. Johnson takes the quilt and gives it to Maggie to hang on the w...
