The story of Nick Traina Analysis

he ate endlessly, and when he aged he often ate until he felt sick, it was as if he could not tell when he was full, "Which was the manic part of him." (pg.10). He did not sleep a lot, at least enough to be considered healthy for a baby. At 18 months Danielle was intrigue by Nick's stare. It made her feel malaise and at that moment she wondered if something was wrong with him. After sharing her thoughts of concern with the pediatrician he said not to worry, and reassured her that Nick was just extremely intelligent and spoiled (which he was) which caused him to be so needy and protective of his mother. He hated having other children around, and when Danielle became pregnant with Samantha Nick became somewhat hyper and was extremely unhappy, "He had a kind of evil twinkle in his eye suddenly, and he became increasingly possessive of me, as though to prove that he was mine and I belonged to him, and nothing would interfere with us." (pg.30) He was four years old at the time and had already been through a lot, a new step father, two brothers, new house, new baby and, his biological father that would leave Nick messages on the answering machine, pretending to be Dracula, which would both frighten and fascinate Nick. He then became obsessed with Dracula, constantly talking about and referring to him. "He began drawing terrible black pictures of people killing each other, swords drawn, and dripping blood from severed limbs." (pg.31) The subjects of these drawings greatly concerned Danielle, she discussed it with a psychiatrist, only to be told that he just had a vivid imagination, and the doctor didn't see any indication of a problem. These drawings frightened Danielle but anyone she shared her feelings with reassured her that things were okay, even though she felt otherwise.
