Our Little Island Government

I think that our right of 'freedom of religion' is a good right. It can be sustained over a long period of time. People should be able to believe what they want to freely and openly. We shouldn't tell people what they have to believe and prosecute them if they don't. I would keep this right if I could go back and do it again.
The 'right to a peaceful protest' is also a good right. I think it can last, not to mention the fact that it gives the people a say in their government. If we think something is unjust, we need to be able to speak out against it. I would definitely keep this right.
The 'right to gay and straight marriages' was an interesting motion. I thought there was going to be a bigger discussion, but either those opposed to it did not speak, or there were very few people opposed to it. I don't think it is a good right or restriction. I do think it will last because it will be one more freedom that people will have, but some homosexuals still might not want to come out of the closet because of the ridicule they might receive. I don't, however, want this law to be in effect. I've been trying to think of why I don't want the law, but I can't think of a democratic reason other than marriage is a union between a male and a female. The people who are in favor of this law are not asking for the same rights as heterosexuals, they are asking for an additional right. They have the right to a straight marriage, just like everybody else, but they want to marry someone who is of their own sex, which is not a right that everybody has or should have. I guess I'm basing my judgment on my morals, and how I was brought up. I think a better right would be the right to heterosexual marriages. If it was my decision, this is what it would be.
'Freedom of speech' is an important right for people to have. It has stuck with us and will probably keep on stick...
