Unfortuntatly, Anne Higgins died on March 31, 1896 (Douglas 14). After the death of his wife, Michael turned in to a petty tyrant through grief and anxiety (Lader 16). Margaret knew that she could not remain at home. The mother of one of her Claverack friends arranged for her to enroll at a new nursing school in White Plains, New York (Douglas 14).
             Margaret's training was in maternity work. The hospital she trained at had been an old manor house with no electricity or adequate restrooms. While working at the hospital she suffered from tubercular glands and had to be operated n twice. Her final assignment was in New York at the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital. The conditions there were better and her work load was lighter. The hospital would have occasional social events, including dances. At one of these dances she met her future husband, William Sanger, an architect. On August 18, 1902, Margaret married William at the age of 23 (Douglas 19). The first year of marriage was happy. Then Margaret's tuberculosis flared up again and to make matters worse she was pregnant. The delivery was long, hard and agonizing, but her son Stuart was strong and healthy. Once Margaret was nurse back to health she had her second son, Grant and 22 months later, their daughter, Peggy.
             Margaret wanted to make money on her own to help with the family expenses and debts. She helped with childbirths in the crowded tenements of the lower East Side. Most residents were poor Italian, Jewish, Irish and German immigrants. In the child births she assisted in, 204 out of every 1,000 died (Lader 30). Women were asking Margaret for ways to prevent these unwanted pregnancies. At the time Margaret had no answer but was tired of hearing about women trying to end their pregnancy through abort...
