The Atkins Diet

             In today's modern society, it seems that every time we look there is a new "miraculous" or "revolutionary" approach to weight reduction being introduced to mass market. These fad diets promise one a myriad of appealing results. Dr. Robert C. Atkins has reintroduced his low carbohydrate/high fat diet in the market. The controversy of this diet consists of the fact that, it prides itself on being healthy one, when in actuality; this diet can cause damaging effects.
             In order to understand how this diet can be damaging, we must first understand the principle of how it works. Dr Atkins states, "That the important factor behind this diet, is in controlling your metabolic rate in order to achieve (what he calls) metabolic advantage" (Atkins, 58). He proposes that to be able to achieve a metabolic advantage, the individual the individual needs to cut his carbohydrate and sugar intake to a minimum. Dr. Atkins states that cutting glucose/sugars and carbohydrates will allow the individual to attain the metabolic advantage since the body will be forced to burn fat for energy. This advantage leads the body into a stage of ketosis. This is the state by which the body burns stored fat for energy.
             Throughout the book, Dr. Atkins alleges that this diet is a healthy one, which has been scientifically tested. In addition, he declares that he has provided evidence that researchers Professor Alan Kelwick and Gaston L.S. Pawan have confirmed the accuracy of this weight reduction measure. Therefore, a person on this diet is being promised not only a healthy diet, but also a scientifically tested and undamaging pathway to weight loss (Atkins, 59).
             After conducting research on Dr. Atkins revolutionary diet, I have found that there are several dangers and medical studies against this type of ketogenic diet.
