"Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne illustrates the temptations of reality and human nature. In this story, Young Goodman Brown attempts to preserve the aspects of life and the belongings of his loved ones. The symbolism of the forest's darkness seems to represent the evil of the devil. Why this Puritan minister went into the forest is beyond wonders. Throughout the story, he questions his beliefs and faces the devil throughout the dark forest. He cannot consider the realism in which he is faced, which shortly becomes a complicated spiritual journey.
             Goodman Brown abandons his loving wife of three months, to outline this part of his life. As he journeys through the forest, a pink ribbon flutters lightly down through the air onto a branch; this represents the symbolism of betrayal to his wife. The turning point of the story is when he cries, "My faith is gone!" as he sees her ribbon floating endlessly through the air. This portrays that Goodman Brown's imagination has left him in a horrifying nightmare. At this point the forest is becoming a world of evil and deception.
             As Brown goes deeper into the forest, he begins to realize his surrounding and the way they represent his life. The snake, witches, wizards, and Indian priest all connect with the devil himself and signify that these are all figments of his imagination. These imaginary figures all come together to form his realization of ideology.
             God seems to disappear in his life at this point, since he has no companionship and no one to confide in. In his experience in this extended, complex journey his perceptive of God has changed to a complicated way of life. He tries to protect himself from Satan using resistance from Puritan beliefs. Once he completes his intention in the forest, he wakes up unaccompanied and fearful realizing that this is Satan's attempt to lure him into evilness.
