Special Event

             February, one of the most important months of the year, if you are a member of the West Port High School band. During the month of February, there is an event called Solo and Ensemble. In this event, you are required to prepare either a solo, to show the ability you have to play by yourself on your instrument, or a duet, trio, etcetera, to show the ability you have to play with others.
             During the last solo and ensemble event, I was required to do a grade five music piece (because I received a "Superior" rating for the grade four music piece I performed the previous year). At first, I was nervous and did not believe I was capable of doing well on such a piece. I practiced and practiced but I still did not think I was good enough. Then, the time came for me to practice with my pianist. I was very grateful for her because she had the patience to help me with the music and teach me rhythms I did not understand. As my pianist and band teacher continued helping me, I slowly approached the level I needed to be at to receive a good rating at the event.
             As the time finally arrived to perform, butterflies filled my stomach, and I became more nervous than ever before. I quickly entered the judge's room, and got set up next to my pianist. I felt my hands getting sweaty, and my throat drying up. The judge told me to go ahead and warm up if I wanted to, and that he was ready whenever I was. I quickly played my "B" flat scale, and started playing the solo I prepared. When it was finally over, I waited patiently for my judge to finish writing his comments, and to comment on what he just heard.
             Afterwards, I was sure I would get a low rating because of all the comments and pointers he gave me. I waited for about thirty minutes for my score to get posted, and throughout the entire time I wanted to scream and release all of my anxiety.
