Most of the short stories has its own theme and symbolic to portray the plot it's story. I believe time such as past, present and future has the symbols which affect different people, places and things. Throughout the short story "A Rose for Emily", by William Faulkner, her father's death symbolizes her mental problem which is affecting her future and the house itself represents Miss Emily darkness.
             Miss Emily's father receives respects and honors from the townspeople because he would loan money to people if their businesses are not running well. However his attitude toward to women tell us he is very old-fashion person. He believes, "no Negro woman should appear on the streets without an apron" (30). Another evident tell us Emily's father do not allow her to date even she turns thirty because he believe that none of the young men were quite good enough for his daughter(32). Basically, Miss Emily could not make her own decision and she needs to obey her father words by accepting her role in the household.
             When her father died, she kept her father decomposing body in the houses and refuses to believe her father is dead by telling everyone in the town he is still alive. Although, Miss Emily father's is not here the crayon portrait of her father has the great influence on her mindset which tell her she still needs to obey her father words . The house is describing to be stubbornness and darkness because of her stubbornness refuses to response tax notices and refuses paying her taxes, when she still believes her father is not dead. Miss Emily house had been weathered and worn by the lapse of time from "big, squarish frame...had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies" (29) to "smell of dust and disuse.
