Teachers are trained to be able to handle different types of students and situations. Most teachers went to school to teach English, math and various other subjects. Some teachers go to school to become what you would call special educators, who teach kids with disabilities. When working with kids with disabilities you realize that each one is unique in their own way. You have to be able to be patient and understanding with kids with disabilities.
When I was a senior in high school, I took peer tutoring for my fifth period class. In this class I got to work with the kids with disabilities. The kids in that class room were either mentally or physically handicapped and sometimes both. The teachers who taught these kids were Mrs. S. and Mrs. McK. Both of these women were great teachers. When I would be in there to during my fifth period, I would watch them with other kids, they always treated them as they would other kids without disabilities. When the class started they took me aside and told me that I should treat them like I would any of my other peers, that way they don't feel as if there disability makes them any less of a person. There was one girl in particular who required the most attention, her name was Sandra. Sandra didn't speak and she didn't have control over some things that happened to her. There was physically no reason that she couldn't speak, she just never did. Mrs. McK. told me that I probably wouldn't get to work with her because she had a very different attitude. She tended to pull hair and dig her nails into someone's hand or arm when they were assisting her to the bathroom or where ever she needed to go, although she never done it purposely. I did get to work with Sandra, I helped her when she needed it and I never treated any different than I would my friends.
