Racism is a major issue that has effected millions over the years, and still effects people today. Racism, by definition, is the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. In the past, there have been several events that have proven that racism only causes problems, wars and death. These include: the holocaust, the segregation of schools, slavery, racist groups like the Klu Klux Klan and many others. The holocaust has probably been the worst event due to racism in all of history.
The holocaust is the term used to describe what Hitler and the Nazis did during World War 2. 'Holocaust' comes from the Greek word 'holokauston', which means "a burnt sacrifice to God." An estimated thirty million innocent people died because the Nazis classified them as racially inferior, that they were ''life, unworthy of life." The Nazis systematically killed not only Jews, but also communists, homosexuals and the mentally and physically handicapped.
The holocaust took place in the 1930's-1940's, right when Hitler rose to power in Germany. This is when the persecution of German Jews began. He terrorized them, forced them into ghettoes, seized their property, and eventually sent them to concentration camps. Once World War II broke out, he established death camps to do what he called, "the final solution of the Jewish question." Out of the approximate six million Jews killed during the holocaust, it's estimated that more then half of them were killed in the gas chambers at these camps.
Racism has occurred all over history, dating back to accounts in the Bible. In the Old Testament, they used slaves in different parts of the world. One specific place was Egypt. Pharaoh held the Israelites in captivity, making them work strenuous hours and not letting them be free.
