as chosen a self-serving growth model. Once he realizes Cochise is well known and a worthy target, Thursday decides to get him back to the reservation and in doing so to make a name for himself even in remote Fort Apache. He doesn't care about the danger to himself or the men, but he does ensure his daughter's safety and future. In this respect, he has done an excellent SWOT analysis. Indians, Calvary men, or "what's her name" Guadalupe, the Spanish household help, they're all the same to narcissistic Thursday--tools to use or manipulate for his glory.
             Once the internal strengths (the loyal, bonded regiment), weaknesses (the Irish penchant for drink and dance--a cliche accepted due to the movie's age, and his daughter), external opportunities (conquering famed Indian chief Cochise), and threats (corrupted Indian agent Silas Meacham selling whiskey and Winchesters) were identified, Thursday abuses his command and has Captain Kirby York go to Cochise to arrange a peaceful settlement. This, of course, is a ruse to find the "renegade" Indians and bring them in.
             Captain York, arguably the true leader for this fort, is mildly argumentative when he realizes Thursday has used York's (identification-based) trust with Cochise to lure the Indians into battle. York doesn't argue much, however, probably running quickly through the decision-making process in a heuristic manner, being a military man, possessing a conceptual (broad) style, and ultimately just following orders. It's not a rational decision for a moral man, but rationality has its limits when the goals are not clear or the problem is not simple (Robbins, 124).
             The setting of this movie, about the 1870's as reportrayed in 1948 by director Ford, calls for the viewer to overlook and/or reconcile many quirky if not outright ribald moments. While the Indians were portrayed fairly, considering a movie of this era...
