In Eat Drink Man Woman, Ang Lee bases the movie around a family who diminishes whenever they come together for their traditional weekly dinner. We have seen daughters leave the family before. Like in Yellow Earth, Cuiqiao will leave her father and brother to either marry or join the draft. And in Raise the Red Lantern, Songlian leaves her family as well as school to become a concubine. The huge difference between Eat Drink Man Woman and the others, is the father is understanding and tolerant. Whereas in the Mainland films, the situation is reversed and the girl is strongly encouraged to marry.
