"Everyday Use" is a story about a woman, Mama Johnson, who has to decide whether she should give the quilts that were handed down through generations to her daughter Maggie or her daughter Dee (Wangero). Before Dee (Wangero) went off to college, she was offered a quilt by her mother, She refused the quilt. Afterwards the quilts were promised to Maggie when she married John Thomas. Dee comes home from college and wants her mother to give her the quilts after she refused them before she left. Dee (Wangero) appears to be very selfish and inconsiderate. Mama Johnson finally make the one big decision whether to give the quilts to Maggie or Dee (Wangero).
             As stated earlier, Dee (Wangero) was offered a quilt before she went off to school and she refused to take it. She refused to take the quilts for several reasons. Dee (Wangero) stated that the quilts were old fashioned and out of style. She didn't want to take the quilts to school with her. It was almost like she was trying to hide her heritage. After this is done, her mother (Mama Johnson) makes a decision.
             Mama Johnson now decides to give the quilts to Maggie when she marries John Thomas, her boyfriend. This was a very good decision because Maggie not only knew how to quilt; she knew the history behind the quilts. The quilts were handed down from her Grandma Dee to her aunt Big Dee. She knew about all the different pieces in the quilt being a part of her Grandma Dee's dresses and Grandpa Jarrell's shirts. Maggie also knew the history behind the quilts. Maggie knew more about the quilt and its history than Dee (Wangero) did.
             Dee (Wangero) comes home from school. After dinner, she went to the foot of the bed and opened a trunk at the end of the bed. She pulled out two quilts. These are the same old fashioned and out of style quilts she was offered before she left for college. Now Dee (Wangero) asks Mama Johnson if she can have the
