Symbolism/Images from The sound and the Fury

             In most sections of Faulkner's book, The Sound and the Fury, he uses many recurring symbols and images to help deepen the reader's understanding of his many characters. Most of these images can be found in the first two sections of the book, what is believed to be Benjy's section and Quentin's section. Being that Faulkner uses stream of consciences in these two sections, theses symbols and images help to trigger memories in the minds of the characters. In Benjy's section symbols such as Caddy's muddy dress and Caddy "smelling like trees" were included with images such as honeysuckle, Quentin's watch and shadow, water, the bridge in Quentin's section. Caddy's image is portrayed Benjy's, Quentin's and Jason's section. Money being a recurring image in Jason's sections whiles the Easter service is in Disley's section.
             In Benjy's section one image is the basis of the whole book; this image is of Caddy getting her dress muddy during Damuddy's death and she takes her dress off at which Quentin says "You just take your dress off," Then she didn't have on anything but her bodice and drawers, and Quentin slapped her and she slipped and fell down in the water. Faulkner uses this metaphor to symbolize her later promiscuity. The fact that Quentin is embarrassed by his sister's actions, this foreshadows his later embarrassments of her sexual activities. Benjy is also affected by Caddy mudding her clothes stating "Caddy was all wet and muddy behind, and I started to cry and she came and squatted in the water". Just as her sexuality will cause his world to crack later on, her muddy dress here causes him to cry. This brings up the idea of Caddy "smelling like trees" to Benjy.
