Workplaces have drastically changed in the last few centuries. In the 20th century most individuals would start a job at a very young age. As that individual learned new skills he would advance in the company throughout his years there. Most of these individuals would retire from the company without experiencing any other workplace. Carolyn Carlson states "some of these companies were known as "womb and tomb" employers."
During this time it was also common for a manger to work his way up to his position. Most employees started on the bottom and were gradually promoted as they learned each new job function and earned responsibility.
Today, however, we find a completely different situation in our workplace. An employee toady has usually worked with several different companies during their career. These individuals possess a wider range of knowledge due to working in so many different fields of work. Employees today also take knowledge from one company and work under a competitor. In this century employees may end up with several different careers.
Today's managers are often hired for their leadership and personality skills. Carlson believes management today is viewed as a skill in itself. Most managers are often placed in a management position and have no basic knowledge of the actual job they are managing. Some managers may not have even worked in a similar field. This change can be either very disturbing or a blessing to some, but who is to say what is right or what is wrong.
