Shakespeare's Twelfth Night is overridden with instances of mistaken identity. Viola, the main character in Twelfth Night, whom is shipwrecked on the coast of Illyria, dresses as a man named Cesario in order to serve under Duke of Illyria, Orsino. In order to successfully play this role, Viola had to change herself and what she represented; she had to change her identity. Although women and men do not generally completely hide their identities to function in society, there are many instances where people pretend they are someone they are not to fool others in our modern day lives.
             In the 21st Century our problems are considerably different than those back in times of Shakespeare. One problem that has arisen is the disguise called the Internet. People can enter this world as a naked canvas and can develop into a person they've always dreamt of becoming, and as Peter Steiner said, "On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog" (6). Unfortunately, it is easy for people to use the Internet to trick other people as who they are means little in cyber space. Internet dating is a perfect example of how people can bend the truth when it comes to who they are. Most men and women know that looks and income are the most enticing aspects of a person. When it comes to speaking with a beautiful man or woman online, a man or woman has the tendency to embellish their good aspects and fail to mention their bad ones. Taking pictures from odd
             angles to hide physical features or saying they work with sick animals and help with rehabilitation when they only groom them on the side for extra cash. It can even go as far as a 45 year old man pretending to be 24 so he can flirt with young women.
