Are Feelings Always the Right Choice?

             Everyday on the news there is a new story of a crime or murder committed. When society hears about a murder, they feel execution is a just punishment for the crime. In Dubus story "Killings", we see the an eye for an eye pattern when Matt Fowler kills his dead son 's murderer for his families sake. Execution provides a relief for the family, an end to the situation, and a sense of safety.
             When a family has a loved one taken away by murder, they want that murderers life taken away as well. We see this with Matt Fowler and his family. The Fowler's did not like the fact that Richard Strout was out on the town, living his life, when he took away their son's life. "Life is considered even more precious [than freedom]. Therefore, the death penalty is considered the severest sanction for the most horrible of crimes" rather than time in prison (Dudley). With life being such a precious gift given at birth, if a person takes another persons life away, that murderer should not be able to go on being able to live their life. When the victims family knows the murderer got sentenced to death row, they get the relief that they want.
             "Execution is "[s]ometimes, [...] simply the most appropriate punishment for the vile crime committed" (Dudley). Ruth did not find relief after her sons death, with Strout not having a punishment yet. Ruth would agree that, when one murders, their life should
             be taken away. "Execution cannot truly represent justice, because there is no recompense to balance the weight of murder. For some crimes, it represents the only just punishment
             available on earth" (Dudley). Strout murdered Frank Fowler, and the only punishment suitable for murder is execution.
             The Fowler's wanted Strout to be executed for his crime. If a person kills once, they may kill again. Families that lose a loved one, like the Fowlers, do not want the murderer to murder agai...
