BOOK REVIEW: RELIGION OF TECHNOLOGY

             The book, "Religion of Technology", written by David F. Noble, presents concepts of religion and technology, along with the correlation between the two concepts, in terms of their similarity for reaching the millennial goal. The theory behind the millenarian approach is based on the idea that technology, through the inspiration of religious beliefs could lead human beings of the earth towards the transcendance of a mortal life in a new earthly paradise. Noble initiates his account with the description of how the millennial model was established in the middle-ages of Europe, approximately ninth century by the philosopher Erigina, who brought about a new form of understanding which viewed the useful arts or "mechanical arts" as a mechanism for transcending the human population towards the recovery of perfection of Adamic knowledge, that was once lost when Adam ate the apple in Eden, causing the great "fall" from paradise.
             David F. Noble explains how the new millennial approach of incorporating the Christian religion and its beliefs as the foundation for the development of technology has inspired the monastry world to support and encourage individuals such as Joachim of Fiore, a prophet. He became the leader of the apocalyptic idea and movement towards the millennium. Fransiscans, especially Roger Bacon followed in Joachim's footsteps by advocating the idea of using the development technology and the useful arts for the purpose of recovering "mankind's" original perfection and knowledge. Noble uses these prominent figures, such as Joachim and Bacon, to give a greater perspective on the new dependency and desire of advancing knowledge on the science study of nature.
