The qualities of Beowulf are courage, strength, and heroism. These qualities allowed him to become an honored King, yet they also lead to his death. Beowulf overcomed the hideous creature Grendel in order to aid the Danes; this shows that Beowulf had an unlimited amount of courage. He possessed great strength that separated him from other men. Defeating Grendel weaponless was an display of magnificent bravery. Beowulf is considered a hero because he was willing to risk his own life for the goods of others.
A person with courage can easily take on any task. Beowulf was fearless of all opponents and fought to defend his fame and glory. Beowulf jumped in the water to fight Grendel mourning mother, he did not know where he was going yet, he went for glory and fame showing no fear. Clearly Beowulf's brave encounters with these monsters show his king and followers that he is worthy of becoming a fearless leader.
Beowulf was "the strongest of the Geats" (pg. 23, Line 110) and also "grater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world" (pg. 23, Lines 110 and 111). Beowulf killed Grendel; Grendel had never come to such a match among a stronger person "That shepherd of evil, guardian of crime knew at once that nowhere on earth had he met a man whose hands were harder" (pg. 33, Lines 432-434). This shows the physical strength that Beowulf is something more than a human being. It makes him special and causes him to stand out from all other men.
