Like people, sports teams grow and go through changes. The Philadelphia 76ers started in 1963. As the years went on, the 76ers team drastically changed through trades and change of coaches. One of the team's worst moves was the letting go of Wilt Chamberlain to the Los Angeles Lakers. The 76ers' record was rapidly declining from finishing one terrible season after the next. After dealing with many different coaches and trades, the 76ers finally made it back to the playoffs in the 1976. In 1976, the moment that would change both the NBA and the 76ers was the singing of Julius Erving, fanatically named Dr. J. Erving and his companions took the 76ers to the Finals. They would eventually be overcome at this contest. This would be a disappointing way to end out the season of lavish play. The league was changing and everyone could sense it. This 1983 76ers team was possibly one of the best teams, but even still, the best was yet to come. In the 1996-1997 season, with a new stadium and new ownership, the 76ers finally drafted a player that would have the same impact on the 76ers as many great players have done before. They drafted the quick and evasive point guard from Georgetown named Allen Iverson. From then on, the 76ers began climbing upward on his small shoulders.
Allen Iverson is a controversial player, but it seems as though the fans love controversial players in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia fans showed their disapproval evidently and were in disbelief that they would let such a dumb occurrence take place. The 76ers would be plagued with terrible trade moves and horrible draft picks s for the next 3 seasons. The city of Philadelphia could not put up with this much longer. Something obviously had to change because the franchise was no longer even a contender. The 76ers finally got the ball rolling after the year 2000 when the superstar Allen Iverson took the reigns of the team and put the 76ers back into the playoffs...
