Psychology

Psychologists study the physical, emotional, and social aspects of human behavior. Like other scientists they formulate hypothesis based on observations and collect data to test them. Research methods vary depending on the topic. Some gather information through controlled laboratory experiments while others administer performance, intelligence, personality, and aptitude tests. Other methods for gathering information are observation, questionnaires, and surveys.
Psychologists normally specialize in one of a number of different areas. Clinical psychologists help mentally and emotionally disturbed patients adjust to life. They may also help medical patients deal with illnesses or injuries as well as helping those going through a particularly traumatic experience. Clinical psychologists often interview patients and give diagnostic tests. They may provide individual, group, or family psychotherapy, as well as design and implement behavior modification programs. Some areas of specialization within clinical psychology are neuropsychology, geropsychology, and health psychology.
Developmental psychologists study the physiological and social development that takes place through out life. Some specialize their work towards a particular age group such as infants or adolescents. Social psychologists examine people's interactions with each other and their social environment. Prominent areas of study in this field are group behavior, leadership, perception, and attitudes.
Experimental Psychologists study behavior processes with human beings and animals such as monkeys and rats. Some areas of study include motivation, attention, thinking, sensory and perceptual processes, learning and memory. They also study the effects of substance abuse as well as genetic and neurological factors effecting the brain. Experimental psychologists work in universities, private research centers, and governmental organizations.
