This interpretation of Roland and of the librarian is a stark deviation from the book where the librarians 'nodded affably from behind the desk. They were used to him' (p8). The national characteristic of the English was explored by George Orwell in 'The Lion and the Unicorn' where he claims English people to have an 'old-fashioned outlook', 'graded snobberies' and a 'mixture of bawdiness and hypocrisy' (p182).
