First Person Point of View in

             The Advantages of a First-Person Perspective in Literature
             There are several angles in which an author can tell a story. Writing a story in the first-person perspective, though, is the best angle because it has many advantages for both the reader and the author of the story. The reader will learn more about the character telling the story while the author is free to develop a character through details given through his or her thoughts. In the short story "The Sun, the Moon, the Sun," by Junot Diaz, the reader is introduced to the inner thoughts of Yunior, a young man struggling to make his girlfriend, Magda, happy after he had been caught cheating on her. By using the first-person perspective, Diaz enhances the character of Yunior and allows the reader to make his or her own opinion of Yunior's actions.
             By using the first-person perspective the reader is able to see the imperfections of Yuniors character. While on vacation in Santo Domingo, Yunior is upset with Magda because she isn't cooperating with his attempts to patch their relationship up. He doesn't understand why she wants to have space and some time to herself, almost like he forgot that he had cheated on her earlier in the year. He also gets upset when other guys talk to her when they are at the beach. He tells the reader, "Every time I dip into the water for a swim, some Mediterranean Messenger of Love starts rapping to her. Of course, I'm not polite." This shows that he gets jealous when Magda talks to another guy, even one time saying to her, "Magda, stop talking to that asshole,"(Diaz 434). He gets angry with Magda when she talks to them, yet Yunior also talks to other girls (not to mention had sex with one).
             When they were dating, Magda and Yunior would only see each other on weekends. On days when they didn't see each other, Yunior said "Sure I checked out other females, even danced with them when ...
