Role of Portia in

             In the play Julius Caesar minor roles play very important parts. These players are used as character foils in order to enhance the development of main characters. The role of Portia embodies the lack of opportunities and stature felt by women of Rome, while providing a context to Brutus' changing character, and introducing the idea of suicide that is pivotal during the conclusion of the play. Her minor role allows Shakespeare to develop these ideas within the plot of the play.
             Roman women are not afforded equal social standing as is explored through Portia's character. As she prods Brutus, who is hiding his plot against Caesar from her, do disclose what the "sick offence within your mind" (II.1.267) she feels that her questions are not being taken seriously because she is a woman. Portia expresses her feelings about not being trusted:
             A woman well reputed, Cato's daughter.
             Think you I am no stronger then my sex
             Tell me your counsels. I will not disclose 'em.
             This passage not only includes a plea to be treated as an equal, but also involves a classic female stereotype of being classified by the men in her life. Portia much like all Roman women of this era was not considered an equal of men.
             While the changing of Brutus during the story is subtle until the end, it is through his conversations with and about his wife Portia in which his character changes become more visible. With his plot against Caesar weighing heavily on his mind, Brutus is unable to hide his new devious side from Portia. While trying to find out what he is up to she asks, "I should not know you Brutus" (II.2.254). The Brutus in which Portia knows is not the one she recognizes behind this sneaking around and having his mind full of heavy thoughts.
