"Religion does more to hide God than reveal God."
I agree with Hauerwas when he stated: "Religion does more to hide God than reveal God." He makes this statement because in the Bible Matthew takes the approach that there is a lot of religious diversity in the world, and the only way we can learn to be thankful for it, is by looking at the whole picture presented by each religion. In that effort, Matthew in the gospel covers everything from the historical development of each religion as well as their worldviews.
The worldview, or the way a particular religion is seen today, is defined by Matthew through ten specific topics: the absolute, the world, humans, the problem for humans, the solution for humans, community and ethics, an interpretation of history, rituals and symbols, life after death, and relationships with other religions. All of these topics help us to grasp a better understanding of each religion as a whole. When many religions are spoken about as reference as a 'whole', the whole is the concept that we as religious people are all here to give praise and worship to God, or God in a different form: whether it be God, Buddha, or Allah!
Another reason why I find Hauerwas' statement to be true is also that in some religious places (The House of God) God is not the focus because concepts like money, greed, and 'old ways' come into play in the house(s) of God. This is said from personal experience. In my Baptist church, a few older members were not allowing the Pastor to reveal his vision of how the church should be, in relevance to youth increase, tithe increase, and the building expanding in general. The older members where so set in their ways that they failed to realize that he is the Pastor who has the visions from God of how certain things must be!
In this reading, I find Hauerwas' statements to be exact and to the point because I strongly believe that religion does m...
