the plutonium. During this time Ukraine is still in the Cold War with the United States of America and other countries, and needed to be able to have military supply for nuclear warfare at hand. Therefore, the pros, as the Soviets saw it, outweighed the cons. Thus, the construction of the dangerous nuclear power plant began. The treacherous advantages drove Ukraine into total destruction of an economically dependent city at the plant. The nuclear power plant supplied a large portion of Chernobyl with jobs, money, and electricity, which is put at risk with the RBMK.
             The reactor works with a huge graphite block structure as the moderator that slows down the neutrons produced by fission. Passing through the reactor core are 1,661 vertical pipes that circulate water as the coolant to remove the heat produced by two sets of long fuel assemblies, which also mount within the vertical pipes. The graphite structure is contained in a steel vessel; this steel vessel is not the containment shell. A helium-nitrogen mixture is used to improve heat transfer from the graphite to the coolant channels and reduce likelihood of graphite oxidation. There are two reactor cooling loops and horizontal steam generators that then feed the pressure pipes within the reactor. Boiling occurs in the Soviet's design of the RBMK. The steam produced by the boiling passes to the steam separator (separates the water from the steam). The steam then passes to the turbine. However, the steam is radioactive but, the steam separator presents a hindrance in the time so radiation levels near the turbine may not be as high in other designs of nuclear plants. This structure's weaknesses are extremely large, though. Lack of a massive steel and concrete containment structure as the final barrier against large releases of radiation in an accident provide fatal qualities to this system.
