To Kill A Mockingbird

             The first six chapters of To Kill A Mockingbird have effectively served as an introduction by establishing the setting, introduced the main characters, hinted at the plot and identified the narrative form that the story will take. However, my first impression of To Kill A Mockingbird isn't the greatest. I found the first chapter very complicated. The many characters and events mentioned in the first chapter alone lead to much confusion during the reading of the first six chapters of the book.
             It was difficult to completely understand the setting of the book at first because the story takes place at a time I know little about. For instance, the time of the story is introduced by means of a quote "fear nothing but fear itself" - Franklin D. Rosevelt, a quote I have never herd before. I had to ascertain the backround of Mr. Rosevelt's statement to understand that the story took place in the 1930s. Nevertheless, even with the years 1930s in mind, it took me some time to acknowledge that "old tyme" feeling, as the first couple chapters were pretty simple. The place however, was very easily understood as it was more obviously stated in the opening chapters of the book. The story took place in Maycomb County, a small , lazy, ordinary, simple town of Alabama. Nothing extraordinary ever happened in Maycomb, and there were few who worked hard everyday. Also, Maycomb wasn't exactly the richest town, and there were few who even had jobs. Despite my first opinion of the book, I think this particular setting is perfect for a novel. The idea of something fun and adventurous happening in a place like Maycomb makes for an interesting story. In addition, as the story unfolds it is told by a 6 year old, which makes the story more enjoyable because the feelings and thoughts expressed in the novel are those if a 6 year old.
