Power and Politics


             Organizational Politics within an organization can be defined as a means of using power to accomplish tasks or goals in the pursuit of self-interests. Politics that occur within an organization can be beneficial when the more formal levels of power and influence have become ineffective. Organizational politics not only provides a means of ensuring continuity during uncertainty and change, but also encourages self-protection. Managers will often use organizational politics in order to avoid taking any responsibility for failures or risks, redirecting blame and defend their authority within the organization. (Schermerhorn, J., Hunt, J., & Osborn, R. 2003. p26). Many top executives combine their power and politics to ensure their own personal place within the organization. Combining power and politics allows management to influence subordinates to do the tasks that will contribute to the executives self preservation and benefits. As a result, the political savvy executive is safe of any negative repercussions if the tasks at hand fail.
             The large number of scandals at many corporations has created an impression that Corporate America as a whole operates without ethics. Last year, for example, Bayer reportedly, among other things, bilked Medicaid of hundreds of millions of dollars, paid students to consume pesticides as a test, and kept its anti-cholesterol drug Baycol on the market despite evidence of its safety concerns.
