Bend it Like Beckham

             Some reviews are labeled "Bend it like Beckham" as a "heterosexist cop-out". How are alternative models of sexuality conveyed in the film? To what extent are the views of the gay press justified?
             The film "Bend it Like Beckham" outlines both negative a positive aspects of homosexuality. Gurinda Chadha uses costume, makeup, blocking, gesture and dialogue to capture common homosexual stereotypes that play a significant role in contemporary society. Through humour and reason, numerous optimistic and pessimistic outlooks of homosexuality are created which generates an impression of cliche personalities for lesbians and gay.
             Throughout 'Bend it Like Beckham" different views of homosexuality are accepted and rejected. Where Tony, a close friend of Jess (the main character) "comes out of the closet", he is given a calm and respectful response. Lesbians however, a subject of ridiculous panic are confined to stereotypical "tomboyish behaviour". This conduct is enhanced in many scenes revolving around Jules. She resists "push-up" bras and clothes that clearly sketch her body, and is evidently obsessed with sport. This is juxtaposed against the exaggerated femininity of her mother, whose clothing (consisting of tight pink and purple outfits) and dialogue associates with her homophobia.
             "When are you going to realise you have a daughter with breasts,
             not a son? No boys going to want to go out with a girl who's got bigger muscles then him!"
             This is said to Jules's father whilst he and Jules are playing soccer in the backyard. She speaks up once the ball knocks her plants – another predictable female persona. After overhearing a fight between Jules and Jess over their coach Joe, Jules's mother mistakenly assumes, only hearing part of the argument, that her daughter is a lesbian and instantaneously turns to disarray.
