Faith

             In "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne one can pick up that it is a story about faith and about truth and a man and his journey down the road of temptation. "Young Goodman Brown" tells a story of a young Puritan man that is drawn to some kind of evil. Brown soon discovers that the goodness of his people, including the minister of his town, his Sunday school teacher from when he was young, and even his wife are attending a communion in the form of witchcraft and devil worshiping. Ultimately in the end, it is not apparent if Brown's occurrence was a dream or if it actually occurred. Brown is inept to excuse the fact that his fellow people are evil, and inevitably spends the rest of his days in desperate loneliness and darkness. In "Young Goodman Brown", Faith, the spouse of Goodman Brown is a extremely significant character in that she is a round character, her motivations are out of the ordinary, and her name, Faith, is an object of symbolism throughout the story.
             In "Young Goodman Brown" Faith is introduced only in the beginning and at the end of the story, yet she still manages to play a very vital role in the short story. Faith is a round character in that she develops throughout the story. Initially Faith is the soft spoken new wife of Goodman Brown who seems to be the typical, innocent and loving wife. This we know to be true due to the opening scene of the short story. In this opening scene Faith is trying to convince her husband to stay with her and not go on his so called journey, " "Dearest heart," whispered she, softly and rather sadly, when her lips were
             close to his ear, "prithee put off your journey until sunrise and sleep in your own bed tonight."(Hawthorne).
