Violent Video Games

             The latest computer games involve pretty gruesome scenes - severed limbs and drive-by shootings are standard fare. But opinion is divided on whether such games give rise to real-life violence. From this divided opinion, there a many disputes involving whether to let minors to buy the games without parental consent or to limit the access of violent games.
             Kids who get their kicks playing gory video games, "the bloodier the better" , would be forced to drag an adult along to the store before they could rent or buy them, under a crackdown proposed Wednesday by a pair of influential aldermen. It can be argued that limiting their access is a foolish matter. What's wrong with letting children have fun? After children play these games, most of them will not go out and have the need to kill someone. Also from playing the game, it is possible for minors to know what to do when they face a potentially violent situation in real life. Many scholars from institutions including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of London, have described the law as misguided. Additonally, most studies and experiments on video games containing violent content have not found adverse effects.
             The video-game industry seems to delight in pushing the envelope -- and the bounds of good taste -- with ever-gorier content. Opponents against these games cite new research that they say suggests strong links between violent games and aggressive behavior. They are disturbed by games' cultural ubiquity and the always-improving technology that makes virtual gore more realistic than ever. Lawmakers in at least seven states proposed bills during the most recent legislative session that would restrict the sale of games, part of a wave that began when the 1999 Columbine High School shootings sparked an outcry over games and violence. None of the measures that passed have survived legal challenge....
