Many people strive to get as many "things" as they can because they think that the more possessions they have, the happier they'll be. They think that acquiring things in this world will cover up for the things that they are lacking spiritually. James on the other hand shows us what we can to do be happy and to feel complete. The book of James gives us many examples of ways that we can fill our lives with joy and ways to help make us a better person. James' main point in writing this book is to show us what to do to become a well-rounded person in God's eyes. By doing this it will make up for all of the physical things that we thought were so necessary.
             "But be doers of the word and not merely hearers who deceive themselves" (James 1: 22). In this part of his letter, he is showing that people should do more than just read the word. It is pointless for people to just look at it and not do what it says. For example, he discusses how you should be quick to listen and slow to speak. This not only allows a man to be more caring and thoughtful but also allows him to listen to God and not be caught up in all the noise of the current day. It is very easy in today's world to not have time for God, but by just listening for a while a man can have a great interaction with the Lord. In addition, a man that does not speak much is valuable in this day because it seems that everyone talks all the time and doesn't take many actions. It is those few people who put into action what they think that really do well. So if one looks at the bible and does what it says then they will find themselves being a more complete person.
             Another principle that James finds important is that of not showing partiality. "My brothers and sisters, do you believe your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ" (James 2: 1).
