The Syndics of the Clothmaker's Build
The painting shows well-dressed men in an office or courtroom. Their well-groomed appearance and suits show that these men are important, possibly judges and mayors. They are all looking at something or someone. They're keeping a close-eye on a certain subject. It seems they are conversing amongst each other about the subject they are looking at. It could possibly be talking in a courtroom about an accused man, who they are looking at right now. The dark background makes it seem like the topic of conversation is bad/evil. The man in the lower right corner could possibly be reading a law book or some important document. Their physical appearance hints that the situation took place in 1600's-1700's.
The title of the painting suggests that each character in the painting is in a different situation. For example, the painting shows one man standing, another man is sleeping in a chair, and another man is reading a newspaper. The painting shows every man performing a different job or having a certain function, which possibly hints that the scene is at a busy business establishment. Every man has his own job/function. Even though two men are shown on the left fiddling with a long piece of cloth, they still have different functions and are not communicating amongst each other. One man is fluffing the material and the other could possibly be cutting it.
Their fine postures and suits show that they are middle-class/upper-class gentlemen who are
classy. It looks like it takes place in the late 1800's or early 1900's.
