On the surface "Because I could not stop for Death-" touches on a very simple subject, death. From reading this poem one may come to the conclusion that the speaker is describing a slow death. It is possible the speaker is referring to their own loneliness. The writer of this poem, Emily Dickinson led a very private life away from others. She was considered to be somewhat of a recluse. Her loneliness could be taken as a slow death referring to how slowly the time passes each day, or she could simply be discussing the topic of death. I however believe that this poem was written to express her feeling for a man that she desired. Although Dickinson lived an isolated lifestyle it was always rumored that she kept up a correspondence with a man. This poem likely manifests some of her feelings for this "mystery" man.
             When women think of a gentleman they usually think of a man that brings them flower and candy on a date, or just someone who open a door for them. Not very many women would go too far to associate Death with being a gentleman. To many that may sound a little eerie. When the speaker describes the gentleman like qualities of death she says, "Because I could not stop for Death- He kindly stopped for me-" This line made me think of chivalry. Why would a woman stop for a man? A woman would never get up to
             open a door for a man or even pull out his chair when attending dinner. The speaker also associates death with this man because she wishes that he would be with her forever. The speaker goes on to say, "The Carriage held but just Ourselves-And Immortality." This describes a love that the speaker desires to last forever. This man that is described could even be the gentleman that Emily Dickinson kept a correspondence with. I believe that this poem is about this man she wrote to.
