Lord of the flies

Lord of the Flies is written by William Golding in 1954. The story takes place on an uninhabited island while an unnamed war takes place in the outside world. The main characters in the novel are Ralph, Jack, Piggy and Simon.
Golding's book is based on symbolism, which plays a great role in the development of the story and can be noticed from the very beginning of the novel. The crashed plane and the large scar represent the first of the mankind's destruction and influence on the island, as well as the world at large.
Ralph is one of the main characters; he is also the first person we meet in the novel. Ralph is "twelve years and a few months" old, as stated on page 10 of the novel. He is one of the oldest boys on the island. He has blond hair, he is tall for his age and very handsome. The writer describes him in the following way: ".... he might make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil". Ralph's father works in the navy. Ralph was chosen to be the leader because of his many positive qualities. He is calm and rational, with sound judgement and a strong moral sensibility. Ralph is a very democratic leader. He takes a good care of the boys. He is also the one to make rules on the island. He gives orders to the other boys, as stated on page 36 of the novel: " we need hunters to get us meat. And another things"..." We can't have everybody talking at once. We'll have to have "Hands up" like at school.".
Ralph is one of the few boys who remains civilised through the entire novel. Together with Piggy, Ralph represents the struggle for order and democracy.
Piggy is a short and overweight boy, about Ralph's age, who wears glasses. Furthermore, he suffers from asthma. As a consequence of his father's death he lived with his auntie most of his life....
