Hip Hop

             The goodness of Hip Hop has been a question in today's society for quite some time. Some say that it causes negative and positive actions to occur due to the graphic natural and sexual reference displayed in its lyrics. Others would argue that Hip Hop places a "matrix" (Britton, "Escaping") on the listener by which they live their life by. To the creators, Hip Hop music represents the "whole culture of movement" (D. Davey, "Hip Hop") that has been apart of the lives of African Americans since their music originated in Africa. All together, Hip Hop places an important role in the upbringing of children by showing many different forms in which an individual can express themselves.
             Dealing with the genre of Hip Hop, a numerous amount of different styles can be brought out for discussion. This particular genre of music has been struggling for some time to earn it's respects for all the positive messages, whether blatant or hidden. You have your, Gangster Rappers, Alternative Rap, Underground Hip Hop, East Coast Rap, West Coast Rap and your commercial Hip-Hop. Although media may portray gangster and other hardcore rap as to be vulgar, it is the way that artists express the "pleasure and pain of life" (Britton, "Ledge") through an artistic view point. When it comes to the more contemporary rappers such as Brand Nubian, Rakim, Erykah Badu and others, they all show hints of Islam in their raps. "The 5 Percenter belief system" (Britton, "Ledge") is what this category of rappers are known to get their messages from. A group called Afrika Bambaata is given credit for founding the "5PN, in Bronx were he would organize the Zulu Nation, merging the Hip Hop culture with community" (Britton, "Ledge").
