After WW II, Germany was rebuilt economically. Within 5 years of this rebuild, there was what is now known as the "Economic Miracle". From 1955-1973 it was policy to invite those from poorer countries to Germany, as "Guest Workers", to solve the post-war shortage of manual labor. In Reiner Werner Fassbinder's film, "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul", Ali, is a recent migrant worker from Morocco. The Second main character, Emmi Kurowski, had migrated with her husband many years ago and since had several children. Fassbinder tells their story using narrative and cinematic technique, viewer identification and themes of racism and loneliness to create the role of the outsider in his film "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul."
             While racism and prejudice are central themes in "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul", they are also attributers to the designation of people as "other". The Germans in the film, including Emmi's neighbors and her coworkers, have simply nothing good to say about foreigners. While some of them immigrated to Germany themselves, they still participated in conversation that created an image of the "guest worker" as sub-human. Emmi listened while her coworkers described a dishonest, unintelligent, sex-crazed maniac, which to them, was the typical foreign man. This in turn, created a superior class out of the Germans and "veteran" workers, and something "other" or less human of the "guest workers."
             Despite the racism, Emmi and Ali were still together with Fassbinder's cinematic and narrative techniques emphasizing the couple's alienation and racial opposition. While the theme of the outsider is central, racial prejudice is fundamental in creating the concept of "other", Fassbinder putts an ironic twist in the plot.
