Charlie has an external conflict, which can be expressed by man versus society. His classmates at the County School mock him because he has never smoked a cigarette (p. 534). He doesn't really want to smoke a cigarette, but because of group pressure he has to do it. He knows that it is a crime to steal the cigarettes from his father's shop, but because Charlie doesn't love his father, and has never had any real relationship with him, he legalizes the crime by describing his father badly (p.534).
