Love and Desire

             The dictionary defines love as a deep, tender ineffable feeling of affection and solitude toward a person. Desire is defined as, to wish or long for; to want. The difference between love and desire seem obvious to everyone. Somehow these two get mixed up in the heat of the moment. Through literature our eyes are opened to this very same instance. Kate Chopin's The Storm, a remarkable story of a woman comforted by a past love, shows us desire can take over at any moment. Margaret Atwood definitely opened us up to both love and desire in Happy Endings..This story shows six different point of views, but one thing is obvious in everyone, someone always wants love.
             In The Storm, Calixta and her husband are very much in love. They have a child and a happy home. However, she subconsciously longs for the affection of a past romance. Once she has the opportunity to be with her lost love, during the storm, the desire is to strong and it imposes her. It is the same as the force of the storm, human and mother nature are very similar, and that is shown through this story. Once the storm passes, so does her affair. She is relaxed about both the storm and her unfaithfulness to her husband. She goes on with her day of taking care of her family and it is never brought up.
             Margaret Atwood's Happy Endings is like no story you will ever read. The story shows different perspectives of falling in love and giving in to the desire that they are faced with. The
             first story is a typical fantasy life and there is never any problems. In one word, it is the perfect life. The second story is about a man who is not emotionally attached to a woman named Mary. He just uses her body for his pleasure and then is done with her. She, however is very much in love with him and takes her life, thinking this is the way to win his affection. The third story tells of how John is older and is in love with Mary.
