"Fences", is a unique drama play written by August Wilson. The play was during the 1950s involving an African American family. This play presents barriers crossed in father-son and husband-wife relationships. Wilson made the title very symbolic to the plot of the play. Throughout the play the main character, Troy Maxson, struggles with the unfairness in society, with family problems, and matters with himself. Troy Maxson can be described as a character that is not afraid to speak his mind, in other words very blunt. Troy faces many family problems through the play, primarily with members of his family. Troy's older son, Lyon, has a goal to become a successful jazz musician but has no job to back that plan up. Troy truly thinks that he his lazy. Troy other son, Cory, is very gifted in football and has recruiters wanting him from colleges. Troy is strongly against Cory playing football. He thinks he should get a real job something that is practical. One of the reasons Troy is oppose to this is because of his past experience with baseball. He was in the Negro Leagues but never got a chance to play in the Major Leagues because he got too old to play just as the Major Leagues began accepting black players. This caused him to be bitter and have negative views towards his son playing sports. Troy's wife, Rose, is the mother of Cory. Rose can be described as a strong, mature, pious woman who deeply loves her family. Even after hearing about Troy and Alberta, a woman he had an affair with, she stayed by her family and even took in Raynell, Troy and Alberta's daughter. She did this after hearing the awful news that Alberta died while giving birth to her. Despite the fact that she allows Troy to control her, she is a good wife to him. At Rose request, Troy and Cory build a fence around their small, dirt backyard it becomes a symbol that represents her desire to keep her loved-ones close by her. This unique...
